Graphic card problems
Problem
Solution
General problems with cards from 3Dfx
Many people seem to have problems with their 3Dfx cards.
Either they've hugh graphic errors or it runs slow like hell. There's no
solution at the moment because this error depends on a so called "hack",
there should be a fix in the next version !
Voodoo1 Problems
With only 4 megs of VRAM most games will run, but many
textures, etc. will be missing.
Do NOT run it any higher than 640x480 and always use full screen set at 640x480.
Voodoo 2 problems
For Voodoo 2 class hardware do NOT
run above 800x600! It takes FAR too much VRAM for the textures, which makes them all
solid, black, grey or disappear.
For the VOODOO 2 card always use
full screen set at 640x480.
Some Voodoo 2 drivers may require MANAGED TEXTURES to be turned
ON. This varies with versions and brands. Use the referance drivers from 3dfx!
Some will also require SHARED textures to be *disabled*. And PALETTE textures can *usually* be on or off(might help).
Voodoo3 problem
Voodoo 3: Do NOT use the Quake3 drivers -- they are REALLY buggy
with DirectX6/D3D support and can cause ALL sorts of weirdness!
Voodoo Banshee: Running in a window consumes HUGE VRAM if you have
your desktop is set at 1024x768 or higher.
For Banshee, it *can* run in a
window, but, for example, my desktop itself is 1152x864 -- that takes up HUGE HUGE amounts
of VRAM, VRAM which can't be then used for textures.
TNT Problems
TNT: Get the REFERENCE drivers from Riva directly -- Creative and
Diamond drivers SUCK rocks.
TNT: Go into the advanced settings and change
the amount of SYSTEM memory that can be used... set it to 0 megs.
ATI RAge 128
First of all : Better get a new card. This thing only has 4 Meg of VRAM and
it sucks.
Also, disable the checkbox that says "Square
textures only" That will cause MOST of the textures to reappear magically.
General
MANAGED TEXTURE: This checkbox in the 3D hardware settings tells
bleem! to use Direct3D for texture management.
Also, on ANY machine that is a Pentium
II-class or higher, if you're not getting VERY fast performance, ESPECIALLY with D3D, then
something is wrong with your DRIVERS.
If you are getting weird textures, hangs, crashes, etc. only in D3D,
that is almost ALWAYS a driver-related problem.
CD-ROM and Sound problems
CDROM Problems
CDROM settings:
1.)In your SYSTEM configuration, go to the PERFORMANCE tab.
2.)Select "FILE SYSTEM"
3.)Select "CDROM"
4.)Then change your CDROM read-ahead settings to the MINIMUM amount
5.)The reason is simple: PSX reads sectors ONE-AT-A-TIME... Windows is trying
to read HUGE amounts of data and it slows everything down.
CD Key problems
If your CD Key is taking 3 to 5 minutes for it to read some thing is wrong! Try reducing the
read-ahead on your CDROM usually fixes that... once again, it's bleem! trying to fight
against windows. You can also DISABLE read ahead in windows
I got this from an E-Mail, I wasn't able to test it yet :
Bleem!'s CD Key check seems to be incompatible with a file located in the
"WindowsSystemIOSUBSYS" directory which is called "Nerocd95.sys". If this
file is in there, it's impossible to start bleem!, it'll hang on startup.
AWE 64
There are some problems with AWE64 drivers -- they cause WEIRD sound
problems -- try a reference version, or a 100% sound-blaster compatible version
Other bleem! problems
The memory card function won't work
I heard this question quite often. Some games really
have problems, but there's one thing you should do before you ask
why it doesn't work :
Go to "Memory Card" -> "Manager" and make a
new memory card file. Without this, you don't have any memory card function !!!
General problems
Where is my cd?
Most pre-ordered CD's should be out now, it just takes some time until
they'll arrive !
Vram and How Much Video Card Ram You Should Have...
For those wondering about why bleem! requires so much VRAM for textures,
it's a VERY long, complex reason that has NOTHING to do with the emulator itself -- it's
the way that PSX stores textures in memory... there will be a FULL detailed FAQ on that as
well.
Right now, anything that has 8Megs is pretty much MINIMAL for most games.
16Megs is the best... unless you have one of the new-fangled TNTs or ATIs
with 32Megs.

Future Plans for Bleem?
We want bleem! to be perfect -- and we're willing to work
hard to make it as close as we possibly can.
And, YES, NetPlay is something that I'm looking into.
But right now, things slated for the first update are:
Better workarounds for the D3D managed textures problem.
Better workarounds for the CDROM read-ahead (probably internal disable
for bleem! while it's running)
FF8 and other "Anti-Mod" protection games
Better workarounds for DVDROM drives that don't fully support CDROM
access.
A Linux Port is at the top of the list and so it GameShark
