New Version Of The Arcade Emulator MAME4ALL GP32

January 3, 2010 by Hawq

An arcade in your pocket, if you have a GP32 that is, with this Mame update, I lack the hardware to try it out so let’s move swiftly onto the news:

    FRONTEND:

  • Frontend Game Selector screen is redrawn in double buffer mode. No flickering display during redraw.
  • Alternative splash and menu graphics. Modified from Antriad’s f-day MAME originals for Rlyeh’s fMAME, which never happened. I sent some emails but received no reply. Hope it’s okay. They just looked too nice not too use.
  • Launching games with ‘START’ button never saves the configuration. Useful for ‘quickstarts’ (ie. no saving which can be slow) and testing.
  • Fixed Frameskip option. Was not previously connected and always just ran in ‘Auto’ mode (which is probably the best setting anyway).
    MAME:

  • Improvements to speed. This is achieved by: optimized compiler settings, code profiling (using -fprofile-generate and -fprofile-use and a custom built GP32 version of libgcov.a), and using GCC’s g++ instead of gcc. As a nice side effect, this seems to have reduced the GP32 sound issues.
  • Implemented option for double buffer video. Select ‘Dblbuf’ from the ‘Video Sync’ option when starting games. Note this also switches off dirty screen handling so some games may slow down.
  • Implemented option to use DrZ80 for sound cpus only. Select ‘Snd CPU Only’ from the ‘Z80 Core’ option when starting games. This is only useful under certain conditions: Games don’t work with DrZ80 and use at least two Z80 CPUs - one for the main CPU and one for the sound CPU. Examples of where this works well are the MCR games (ie. Tapper, etc), Capcom games (1942) and Sega System 1 games (Choplifter, Wonderboy, etc). There are most likely other games where it will be useful and provides a nice speed boost.
  • Fix some bugs when using two or more FM sound systems.
  • Fix bug with transfering MAME streams sound buffer to GP32. Much nicer sound, very evident with speech samples. ie. Star Wars.
  • Fix ‘Discs of Tron’ display and controls.
  • Fix for all games with stereo sound.
  • Added exidy440 games: crossbow, cheyenne, combat, cracksht, claypign, chiller, topsecex, hitnmiss, hitnmis2, whodunit, showdown.
  • Fixed exidy game speed for: sidetrac, targ, spectar, spectar1, mtrap, mtrap3, mtrap4, venture, venture2, venture4, pepper2, hardhat, fax and victory.
  • Fixed Cinematronics games. Well some of them anyway.
